Description

This nightscape picture was taken in Jasper National Park, within the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada. Images of the Milky Way were taken while facing southwest towards the mountains (around Mt Fryatt and Mt Geraldine) from the side of the Athabasca River.

Both foreground and sky images were taken in portrait orientation. The composite image (foreground plus sky) is therefore extended vertically. Indeed, this image is a crop of the original picture. The large vertical field of view has the effect of making the high (and beautiful) mountains appear much smaller than they really are. Together with the fact that the imaging site was so far north, the galaxy core is obscured by the mountains. I have added two annotated images in the history to show the location of the galaxy core and other objects in relation to the mountains.

Images were taken using Nikon D750 DLSR (unmodified), fitted with a Sigma Art 20mm f/1.4 lens.

Tracked images of the sky were taken using an (old/second-hand) iOptron tracker and stacked using Sequator: 5x120 seconds at f/4 and ISO 2250.

Untracked images were taken of foreground mountains and the area near the Athabasca River using a fixed tripod. A blend of twilight and daytime images was taken. Twilight: 10x180 seconds at f/5.6 and ISO 800. Daytime: 9 x very short exposures at f/11 and ISO 100.
